Draft Terms of Reference for Roper Valley Iron Ore Project

20 Oct 2017

The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) has released the draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement for the Roper Valley Iron Ore Project for public review.

Northern Territory Iron Ore (NTIO) proposes to produce saleable iron ore using open cut mining methods and beneficiation, specifically from three deposits in the Roper Region, approximately 420 km south-east of Darwin and 150 km east of Mataranka. Iron ore would be transported to a purpose-built barge loading facility located near the mouth of the Roper River and then transhipped by barges to ocean going vessels moored offshore in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The NT EPA decided that the Roper Valley Iron Ore Project requires assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act at the level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The project is a controlled action under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is being assessed under the bilateral agreement between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments. The relevant controlling provisions are Listed threatened species and communities (sections 18 & 18A), Listed migratory species (sections 20 & 20A), and Commonwealth marine areas (sections 23 & 24A).

The draft Terms of Reference were developed by the NT EPA to assist NTIO in preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project.

The draft Terms of Reference are now available for public comment. Comments are to be submitted on or before COB 3 November 2017.

The NT EPA will then finalise and issue the Terms of Reference to NTIO for preparation of the EIS.
