Waste and Pollution Guidelines
The NT EPA is committed to providing information about waste and pollution to the public and other stakeholders. General information on waste and pollution and requirements of Environment Protection Approvals, Environment Protection Licenses, and Waste Discharge Licenses is provided in a variety of formats, including factsheets and more comprehensive Standards and Guidelines.
Standards are policy documents that describe minimum expectations in relation to a particular subject matter. These are endorsed by the NT EPA or have been developed by the NT EPA.
You are encouraged to do better than the minimum.
The NT EPA would expect a well-researched and clear justification for any deviation from the minimum expectation of a Standard.
Guidelines are policy documents that describe minimum expectations in relation to a particular subject matter that are endorsed by the NT EPA or have been developed by the NT EPA. These differ from Standards by providing some flexibility in how they are applied. None the less the NT EPA would expect that any variation from a Guideline would be supported by a well-researched and clear justification.
Factsheets are designed to support Standards or Guidelines or provide specific information on other Waste and Pollution matters. Factsheets are generally brief, one or two page documents that provide information in a dot point format.
Additional references are endorsed by the NT EPA and provide additional information on environmental protection, including methodology for assessing environmental harm. The references are derived from a variety of sources including national guidelines.
