Overview

Department of Defence proposes to carry out 2 capital dredging campaigns of approximately 100,000m3 to 120,000m3 as part of upgrades to the Royal Australian Navy wharf facilities and basin navigation area at HMAS Coonawarra. Dredge spoil would discharge at a location near HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin Harbour, Larrakeyah, Darwin. The proposed action includes ongoing maintenance dredging at HMAS Coonawarra in the order of 10,000m3 to 15,000m3 every 5 to 7 years.

Statutory notice 13 April 2022

The NT EPA invited public comment on a referral for standard assessment submitted by Department of Defence to carry out 2 capital dredging campaigns and ongoing maintenance dredging as part of upgrades to the Royal Australian Navy wharf facilities and basin navigation area at HMAS Coonawarra, Larrakeyah, Darwin.

Interested persons were invited to make a submission by 16 May 2022. The NT EPA made this notice in accordance with regulation 52(1) of the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.

Statutory notice 2 May 2023

The NT EPA published a statutory notice on 2 May 2023 inviting public comment on the supplementary environmental report for the HMAS Coonawarra - Dredging and Dredged Material Management proposal, submitted by the Department of Defence. The NT EPA published the notice in accordance with regulation 122 of the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.

NT EPA notice

Statutory notice (4 September 2023)

The NT EPA provided its assessment report 103 (including a draft environmental approval) to the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security on 23 August 2023, under sections 64 and 65 of the Environment Protection Act 2019.

The assessment report and draft environmental approval may be inspected and obtained above.

The NT EPA publishes this notice in accordance with section 67 of the Environment Protection Act 2019.

Once the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security’s decision is made, it can be viewed on the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security website.
