Overview

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is proposing to upgrade 73km of gravel road between Pirlangimpi and Pickertaramoor on Melville Island. The works include pavement lifts, re-gravelling, sealing to a two-lane standard, formation widening, realigning, installation of drainage structures, overall improvements to the flood immunity and progressive rehabilitation of cleared areas. The upgrades would include development of 23 gravel pits, 14 road alignments and access to water extraction with a total land clearing requirement of up to 296.4 hectares.

Statutory notice 25 May 2022

The NT EPA invited public comment on a referral for standard assessment submitted by the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics to upgrade 73km of gravel road to bitumen on Melville Island, 80km north of Darwin.

Interested persons were invited to make a submission by 22 June 2022. The NT EPA made this notice in accordance with regulation 52(1) of the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.
