Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the proponent, proposes rehabilitation activities to address long-term environmental legacy issues at the former Rum Jungle mine site, including the satellite sites Mount Fitch and Mount Burton, located 6km north of Batchelor, Northern Territory (NT).

The project was assessed under the NT Environmental Assessment Act 1982 and as a 'controlled action' under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The project was assessed at the level of an environmental impact statement (EIS) under the bilateral agreement between the NT and Australian governments. Due to the commencement of the NT Environment Protection Act 2019 on 28 June 2020, transitional arrangements for the assessment applied.

NT EPA notice

Statutory notice (10 March 2023)

The NT EPA completed its environmental impact assessment on 15 February 2023 and provided its assessment report and draft environmental approval to the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security, under sections 64 and 65 of the Environment Protection Act 2019 (EP Act).

The assessment report and draft environmental approval may be inspected and obtained above.

The NT EPA publishes this notice in accordance with section 67 of the EP Act.

Once the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security’s decision is made, it can be viewed on the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security website.
