Arafura Resources Ltd

Arafura Resources Limited proposes to mine rare earth elements, key components in many green and sustainable products such as wind turbines and hybrid vehicles. The proposal includes open cut mining and processing over a 55 year mine life. The Project is located 135 kilometres north-northwest of Alice Springs.

The Project has been assessed under the Environmental Assessment Act (EA Act) at the level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The draft EIS was made available for comment from 27 May to 22 July 2016.

The Project is a controlled action under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and has been assessed under the bilateral agreement between the Northern Territory and Australian governments. The relevant controlling provisions are listed threatened species and communities (section 18 and 18A) and protection of the environment from nuclear actions (sections 21 and 22A).

The making of Assessment Report 84 and providing it to the Minister marks the completion of the environmental impact assessment by the NT EPA.

On 20 June 2019, the Proponent submitted a notification of alterations to the Proposal in accordance with clause 14A of the Environmental Assessment Administrative Procedures 1984. The NT EPA considered that the Project has been altered in such a manner that its environmental significance has changed, but that Assessment Report 84 adequately addresses the potential impacts that could be significant. The NT EPA concluded that further assessment is not required.
