Guidance on Adaptive Management
20 Dec 2018
The NT Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) has released its Guidance on Adaptive Management.
Adaptive management aims to provide a framework for sound management and decision-making in the face of uncertainty. It is a carefully planned and structured approach supporting improved management and decision making over time in response to growing knowledge and changing circumstances. In practice, it involves implementing evidence-based management actions; monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of these actions; and systematically adapting those actions according to what is learned.
The NT EPA recognises the potential for using an adaptive management approach in the context of environmental impact assessment and approvals, with a focus on mitigating and managing the harmful impacts of activities on the natural environment. The Guidance on Adaptive Management has been developed to oversee the use of adaptive management in the context of environmental impact assessment and approvals – the circumstances when the NT EPA would consider its implementation, the adaptive management approach and how it is to be incorporated into the environmental impact assessment and approvals process.
The Guidance on Adaptive Management can be viewed on our Environmental Assessments Guidelines page.
