On 22 October 2025, INPEX met with the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) to provide a briefing on its under reporting of Volatile Organic Compounds including benzene emissions estimates from the Ichthys LNG facility near Darwin.
During the meeting, INPEX presented summaries of its modelling of the Darwin airshed and community health risk assessment. The INPEX assessment found the risks from the benzene emissions to the community, including to vulnerable groups, are low and below relevant health thresholds.
The NT EPA has sought further information to verify these findings and will independently audit monitoring and modelling undertaken by INPEX.
The NT EPA has commenced an investigation into any potential breaches of the Environment Protection Licence or any other relevant legislation.
The NT EPA is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into environmental and human health risks. The NT EPA will continue to share information, and work closely, with the Chief Health Officer to independently assess the conclusions presented by INPEX.
INPEX has submitted its Annual Environment Monitoring Report to the NT EPA and it is now available on the INPEX website under Reports | INPEX.
INPEX has also submitted its 2024-25 National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) report to the NT EPA.
The NT EPA will continue to share updates on matters that may have implications for public health and safety in consultation with the Chief Health Officer.
