RTA Gove Closure Works at Pond 2 West

Overview

RTA Gove Pty Ltd is currently undertaking the staged decommissioning and rehabilitation of its alumina refinery and residue disposal area. In order to undertake works required for closure of Pond 2 West at the residue disposal area, disturbance will be required outside the currently approved footprint. It is proposed that footprint of closure works be expanded by approximately 2 ha beyond the currently approved residue disposal area (lease number 749656) to facilitate the proposed off-lease activities including:

• Clearing of a working area totalling approximately 2 ha including about 1 ha of significant or sensitive vegetation (mangroves)
• Bulk earthworks, erosion and sediment control works, construction of access roads and construction of embankment batter to toe areas
• Revegetation of the final Pond 2 landform with native vegetation
• Ongoing monitoring and maintenance including surface water quality, vegetation and erosion performance.

The proposal will commence in 2025 and will take two years.

Statutory notice (16 October 2024)

The NT EPA published a statutory notice on 16 October 2024 to invite public comment on a referral for standard assessment, submitted by RTA Gove Pty Ltd for the Closure Works at Pond 2 West.

Interested persons were invited to make a submission by 13 November 2024. The NT EPA published the notice in accordance with regulation 52(1) of the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.
