Northern Territory Iron Ore Pty Ltd
Northern Territory Iron Ore (NTIO) proposes to produce saleable iron ore using open cut mining methods and beneficiation, specifically from three deposits in the Roper Region, approximately 420km south-east of Darwin and 150km east of Mataranka.
Iron ore would be transported to a purpose-built barge loading facility located near the mouth of the Roper River and then transhipped by barges to ocean going vessels moored offshore in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The NT EPA decided that the Roper Valley Iron Ore Project requires assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act at the level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The project is a controlled action under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is being assessed under the bilateral agreement between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments. The relevant controlling provisions are:
- Listed threatened species and communities (sections 18 and 18A)
- Listed migratory species (sections 20 and 20A) and
- Commonwealth marine areas (sections 23 and 24A).
