J Quarry Haul Road Realignment Project

Overview

Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd (GEMCO) is proposing to construct a haul road within a realigned corridor, and construct associated access tracks to connect a future mining area known as J Quarry with existing mining areas on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The haul road would include a single span bridge across the Emerald River and a culvert crossing of an ephemeral tributary (known as the Southern Tributary). The total clearing footprint would be 24 hectares.

Public consultation

Statutory Notice (9 November 2020)

The NT EPA invites public comment on a referral for standard assessment submitted by Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd to develop the J Quarry Haul Road Realignment Project. The referral documents can be inspected on the NT EPA consultation hub, or obtained by contacting the NT EPA. Interested persons may make a submission by 7 December 2020. The NT EPA gives this notice in accordance with regulation 52(1) of the Environment Protection Regulations 2020.

Three government authorities provided no comment on the referral information, including the:

• Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics
• Department of Health and
• Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet.
